Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the Casper test (RACGP National Entry Assessment) and how to prepare with PRAXIS.
About the Casper Test
The Casper test for AGPT (formally the RACGP National Entry Assessment) is the situational judgement test that decides who enters Australian GP training. Format, length, cost, booking, and how to prepare.
What is the Casper test?
The Casper test for AGPT is the situational judgement test (SJT) used as the entry assessment for Australian General Practice Training. It is now formally called the RACGP National Entry Assessment, but most candidates still know it as the Casper test because it runs on the Acuity Insights platform that originally branded it. The test presents 11 scenarios (4 video, 7 typed) and 22 open-ended questions across about 75 minutes. There is no clinical-knowledge content; the test measures judgement, empathy, and professional reasoning across nine competencies.
How long is the Casper test?
The Casper test for AGPT runs for approximately 65 to 85 minutes, including the optional breaks between sections. The 4 video scenarios give you 1 minute per recorded answer; the 7 typed scenarios give you 3 minutes 30 seconds for both written answers in each scenario. Most candidates finish in roughly 75 minutes from start to submission.
How long does the Casper test take?
Plan for a full 90-minute window when you sit the Casper test. The test itself takes 65 to 85 minutes, but you also need to complete ID verification, run the platform tech check, and load each scenario. There is no way to pause once a scenario begins, so it is worth being seated, hydrated, and ready well before your scheduled start time.
How much does the Casper test cost in Australia?
The Casper test for AGPT costs AUD $190 per sitting in Australia. The fee is paid to Acuity Insights at the time of booking and is non-refundable. You are permitted only one attempt per calendar year, so if you need to resit you pay the fee again the following year. There are currently no fee waivers or sliding-scale options for Australian candidates.
How do I book the Casper test for AGPT?
You book the Casper test for AGPT through your Acuity Insights account once your RACGP eligibility is confirmed. Submit your AGPT application via the RACGP website first; once eligibility is approved, register at the Acuity Insights platform, complete ID verification (1–2 business days), and then book your preferred 2026 test window (March, May, or August). Booking windows typically open about a week before each test date and fill quickly — set a calendar reminder for the booking-open date.
How do I prepare for the Casper test?
Effective Casper-test preparation combines understanding the 9-competency framework, sitting timed mock scenarios under the real 3.5-minute typed-response time pressure, and reviewing what separates Q4 answers from Q2. Most candidates need 4 to 8 weeks of regular practice. Start with our typed-response strategy guide at /blog/casper-typed-response-strategy-3-5-minutes, then sit free timed mocks at /practice. If your typing speed is below 60 WPM, prioritise that first — it is a hard ceiling on response quality in 3 minutes 30 seconds.
About the RACGP National Entry Assessment
Background on the RACGP National Entry Assessment (the Casper test): who runs it, what it measures, the 2026 test dates and cost, and how it determines which GP training places you can access. Start here if this is your first time sitting the exam.
What is the RACGP National Entry Assessment?
The RACGP National Entry Assessment is a situational judgement test (SJT) used as the primary selection criterion for entry into GP training programs in Australia, including the Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program. Since 2025, it has been run by the RACGP (replacing the previous Casper-branded test). It tests personal and professional characteristics (not clinical knowledge) across 9 competencies. The test consists of 11 scenarios and 22 questions, each scored Q1–Q4 by independent human raters.
How is the Casper test scored?
Responses are scored on a Q1–Q4 quartile scale, where Q4 is the highest and Q1 is the lowest. Each of your 22 questions is scored by a different human rater, so no single person sees your entire test. Raters typically mark 40–70 questions per hour. Your overall quartile score determines your ranking among all applicants and directly affects which training regions you can access.
When are the 2026 Casper test dates?
The 2026 test dates are: March 22 and 25 (booking closed); May 24, 27, and 30 (booking window: 13–20 May); August 22 and 26 (booking window: 12–19 Aug). Booking windows typically open approximately one week before the test date. The test costs $190 per sitting and candidates are permitted only one attempt per calendar year.
How many doctors apply for GP training in Australia each year?
Approximately 2,400 candidates apply for GP training in Australia each year. Around 1,500 RACGP AGPT places and 250 ACRRM places are available, meaning roughly 900 candidates miss out each cycle. Competition has increased significantly since 2023, making strong SJT preparation more critical than ever.
What is the difference between RACGP and ACRRM?
RACGP (Royal Australian College of General Practitioners) offers a 3-year training program in metro or rural settings, with approximately 1,350 AGPT places per year. ACRRM (Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine) offers a 4-year program in rural settings only (MM2–7), with approximately 150 AGPT places and 100 RGTS places. Both pathways lead to GP Fellowship. The GP SJT is used for selection into both programs.
About the SJT Format
How the Situational Judgment Test is structured: the 9 competencies raters score against, the 11 scenarios split between video and typed responses, timing per question, and what separates a Q1 answer from a Q4 answer in practice.
What does SJT stand for in medicine?
SJT stands for Situational Judgment Test. It is a type of psychometric assessment that presents candidates with realistic workplace scenarios and evaluates how they respond to ethical dilemmas, interpersonal conflicts, and professional challenges. SJTs are used widely in medical selection globally (including the UK Foundation Programme and Australian GP training) because they assess judgment and values rather than factual knowledge.
What is tested in the GP SJT?
The GP SJT assesses 9 competencies: Collaboration, Communication, Empathy, Fairness, Ethics, Self-awareness, Resilience, Problem-solving, and Motivation. Importantly, the test evaluates personal and professional characteristics, not clinical knowledge. There is no single correct answer. Raters assess how thoughtfully and authentically you navigate complex human situations.
How long is the Casper test?
The test is approximately 65–85 minutes in total, including optional breaks. It consists of 11 scenarios: 4 video response scenarios (1 minute per question, answered by webcam) and 7 typed response scenarios (3.5 minutes for both questions combined). There are 22 questions in total across all scenarios.
What is the difference between Q1 and Q4 answers?
Q1 answers typically jump straight to action, use empty buzzwords like 'non-judgmental' and 'empathetic' without demonstrating them, and sound robotic or formulaic. Q4 answers lead with genuine empathy, acknowledge the complexity of the situation, normalise the person's difficulty, address the human element first, and only then offer practical support. The critical difference: Q4 shows empathy rather than just telling the rater you are empathetic.
Does typing speed matter for the Casper test?
Yes, significantly. Candidates typing under 55 WPM are at a serious disadvantage because they cannot develop nuanced, empathetic responses in the time allowed. Candidates typing over 80 WPM gain extra thinking time to craft more thoughtful answers. Note that speech-to-text and dictation tools are not permitted in the typed section of the test.
